Secret Florence: Buchette
Description
Discover the fascinating history of Florence’s buchette (wine windows), a unique tradition that dates back to the time of Cosimo I de’ Medici. Originally created to allow tax-free wine sales directly from noble estates to Florentines, these small openings in palace facades became symbols of the city’s wine trade and a vital means of commerce—especially during the bubonic plague, when they allowed for safe, contact-free transactions.
Though these charming architectural features flourished for centuries, their use declined after the 19th century and nearly disappeared following the devastating flood of 1966. Today, 155 wine windows remain scattered throughout Florence, offering a glimpse into a long-lost tradition.
Join us for a guided tour to uncover the hidden stories behind these historic portals and their role in Florence’s cultural and economic past!
